WAITANGI DAY
Waitangi day is celebrated every year in NZ as the day that the Moari Chiefs made a settlement with the British Crown - effectively they agreed to allow NZ to become part of the British Empire in return for protection. If interested visit http://www.waitangi.net.nz/. There is a lot of scepticsm around the treaty that was signed - e.g Did the chiefs understand what they were signing?, were they co erced?, did they have a choice etc?? Its a National Holiday in NZ and the town of Waitangi is a stone's throw from where we were staying, so we thought we'd have a look whilst in the region. Here are some of the preparations for the day - unfortunately a huge storm blew up on the actual day and we couldn't participate. :-((
This house is where the treaty was signed.
This is the site where the British Flag was raised afte the signing of the treaty.
